Eles ficaram conhecidos por sucessos como "Down Under", "Who Can It Be Now ", "Be Good Johnny", "Overkill" e "It's a Mistake". Seu membro fundador e vocalista é Colin Hay, que assume os vocais principais e a guitarra. Depois de tocar em um duo acústico com Ron Strykert de 1978 a 1979, Hay formou o grupo com Strykert no baixo e Jerry Speiser na bateria. Logo depois, juntaram-se a eles Greg Ham na flauta, saxofone e teclados, e John Rees no baixo, com Strykert voltando para a guitarra solo. O grupo era gerenciado por Russell Depeller, um amigo de Hay que ele conheceu na Universidade La Trobe. Essa formação alcançou sucesso nacional e internacional no início e meados da década de 1980.
