[Verse 1]
A
Heaven was abuzz, they knew who it was
When he raced in through the gates
A
Passed 'em all in line like he did every time
On Earth, that's what made him great
A
Had a look around, shook his head up and down
Let out with that #3 yell
Right there on holy land, stuck out his hand
Said, "Howdy! My name's Dale"
[Chorus]
He thanked God he was blessed with the courage
He was asked to do all it took to get a win
D
His only fear was when he got here
Saint Peter wouldn't let him in
He had a wild side, how he lived is how he died
A B
Pedal to the metal going fast
Now there's a trophy collection in a corner of heaven
Of a man with a checkered past
[Harmonica Solo]

[Verse 2]
Well, the first thing he did was ask about his dad
Then he went on over to his house
Said, "I bet you never knew I'd be coming here too"
Said, "Son, you know I had my doubts"
As they sat and talked, up a man walked
D B
Dale knew he wasn't a fan
A
Ol' Ralph was floored when he'd thrown Henry Ford
He was proud to be a Chevy man
[Chorus]
He thanked God he was blessed with the courage
He was asked to do all it took to get a win
D
His only fear was when he got here
Saint Peter wouldn't let him in
He had a wild side, how he lived is how he died
A B
Pedal to the metal going fast
Now there's a trophy collection in a corner of heaven
Of a man with a checkered past

[Bridge]
On Sunday afternoon
After the sound of the last church bell
D
He'll be riding with Junior
In heaven, he's still giving 'em... well
[Chorus]
He thanked God he was blessed with the courage
He was asked to do all it took to get a win

His only fear was when he got here
Saint Peter wouldn't let him in
He had a wild side, how he lived is how he died
